About Researchers

VHL researchers come from many different medical and scientific specialties. Basic laboratory research to understand exactly how the VHL mutation leads to tumors is conducted by scientists based in laboratories. They may work with cell cultures or animal models such as fruit flies, zebrafish, and special strains of mice. Clinical researchers work directly with patients to learn more about VHL and to test medications and surgical treatments. In the US, many of these physician researchers are located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), or at one of the VHL Clinical Care Centers.
