KidneyCAN – March 10 – 11
The two sources of the federal dollar that support medically-related scientific research are: 1) the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) extramural grant program and 2) the Department of Defense’s (DOD) Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP). Currently, VHL is named as a condition eligible for CDMRP research funding in the Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program, without restrictions. This allows researchers to apply for grant funding for continued VHL research.
However, every year we have to fight to renew this vital funding for a cure. A major first step is to ask Congress to recognize that finding a treatment and cure for VHL is a key to treating and curing many other forms of cancer and to strongly encourage NIH to support additional internal research and extramural grants on VHL.
Such advocacy is not just a seasonal project that takes place during Congress’ budget appropriation process; it is a year-round process.
